Stakes, the anime is a masterclass of enjoyment, including one of the most intense plots in anime. Code Geass also has a beautiful conclusion and one of the best endings in anime. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Release Date October 6, 2006 Seasons 2 3 'Gintama' (2006) Studio: Sunrise Image via Sunrise Gintama takes place in an alternate reality of Edo, Japan, where aliens take control of the Earth. So, despite living in ancient times, the city is far in the future. The anime follows Gintoki, Kagura, and Shinpachi, who take on odd jobs that often get them in insane situations. This comedy and action anime has the gang fighting space pirates, aliens, and a rag-tag group of cops, which creates both hilarious and dramatic moments. Gintama can blend humor, action, and drama better than any other anime as they handle it perfectly, naturally flowing from one to the other or picking the perfect time to switch. There isn't much anime funnier than Gintama, which uses its parody/referential, absurdist, and meta humor with its incredible cast to create comedy unique to Gintama. However, when Gintama gets serious, it gets serious, featuring gripping backstories and dramatic plots with incredible fights. Combining all of these elements, Gintama has a perfect ending that includes all of these elements, making it one of the best long-running anime ever. Gintama Release Date April 4, 2006 Seasons 10 Watch on Crunchyroll 2 'Monster' (2004) Studio: Madhouse Image via VIZ Media Monster is the fourth and final anime from Madhouse on this list, proving how influential the studio was in the 2000s. Tenma takes it upon himself to track down Johan and end his life. Along the journey, he uncovers the gruesome mystery behind Johan and the world he lives in. Written by one of the most influential Mangaka, Naoki Urasawa, with other famous works like 20th Century Boys and Pluto, Monster stands out as his magnum

40 years ago, Akira Toriyama began serializing in Shonen Jump what many would argue is the greatest shonen manga series of all time, Dragon Ball. Over the course of ten years, from September 1985 to August 1995, Toriyama would pen the 519 chapters that make up his martial arts manga magnum opus. The series would grow and evolve dramatically throughout that time, though it still always kept a tone and flavor that was very much Toriyama. That Toriyama personality is the secret ingredient of what made Dragon Ball’s original run so legendary, and it’s why fans were so excited when it was announced that the latest entry in the series’ anime pantheon, Dragon Ball DAIMA, would have heavy involvement from Toriyama himself. This contrasts from the DBZ anime’s original follow-up, Dragon Ball GT, which only featured some general ideas and character designs contributed by the series’ creator. It even seems to differ from Dragon Ball Super, because despite the films being written by Toriyama, the anime adaptation was largely left to Toei, and the Super manga is mostly written by Toriyama’s protege, Toyotarou, along with guidance and revisions from Toriyama. DAIMA seems to be the first major creative undertaking Toriyama has been involved with in quite a while, making the fan hype completely warranted. As much as Toriyama is putting more into this than he has prior anime projects, though, that still may not actually amount to as much as some fans previously thought. Related 40 Years Later, How Does Dragon Ball Just Keep Getting More Popular? Dragon Ball Daima continues the brand's relevance and popularity, with Dragon Ball having outlived the success of several other classic anime. Toriyama Was More Involved in DAIMA Than Any Other Dragon Ball Anime Series The Anime Was Never as Important as the Manga to Dragon Ball’s Creator - Until Now At New York Comic Con 2023‘s Dragon Ball Special Panel, Akira Toriyama formally announced to fans via a personally written message projected on-screen that he was “working on a new Dragon Ball”. Called “DAIMA”, he described the new series as “a grand adventure with intense action in an unknown and mysterious world.” In that same announcement, Toriyama gave an important piece of information which was the most exciting of all for longtime fans: he worked closely on DAIMA himself. As Toriyama put it: I came up with the story and settings, as well as a lot of the designs. I’m actually putting a lot more into this than usual! - Akira Toriyama This was such big news because Toriyama is infamously hands-off with the anime adaptations of his manga.
